In Part 1, the examiner asks you questions about familiar topics such as your hometown, work or studies, hobbies, food, daily routines, and interests. This part usually lasts 4-5 minutes and is designed to make you feel comfortable before moving into more complex questions in Parts 2 and 3.
Many students think Part 1 is easy, but examiners are carefully evaluating your:
Fluency and Coherence - Can you speak smoothly and logically?
Vocabulary - Are you using a range of words correctly?
Grammar - Do you vary your sentence structures?
Pronunciation - Are you clear and understandable?
A common mistake is giving very short answers. For example:
❌ “Yes, I like music.”
Instead, expand your response:
✅ “Yes, I really enjoy listening to music, especially pop songs. Music helps me relax after a busy day, and sometimes I even try to sing along to improve my English pronunciation.”
This approach shows the examiner that you can extend ideas naturally.
Practice Out Loud Daily - Answer common questions in front of a mirror or with a study partner.
Use Real-Life Examples - Share personal experiences to make answers authentic.
Avoid Memorized Answers - Examiners can tell if your response is rehearsed.
Think “What, Why, How” - Always add one or two extra sentences to expand your point.
